Why Do I Need Metal Marking Spray?

While CO2 laser machines can mark directly on a variety of coated metal surfaces, bare metals reflect the CO2 laser's wavelength, so you have to pre-treat the surface with a metal marking spray. The heat of the laser bonds the metal marking spray to the metal, creating a raised mark. Since this process does not etch directly into the metal, it leaves the metal's structural integrity intact.

What Type of Laser Do I Need?

If you're using a laser marking spray, you'll need a CO2 laser engraver of at least 25 watts or above. Marking sprays aren’t really necessary if you are using a fiber laser marker as the optical beams from fiber lasers are strong enough to pierce through metal surfaces. If you have a low-wattage diode laser, you won't be able to get the results you're looking for, since lower wattages will result in smudging. Check your CO2 machine's wattage to ensure crisp, clean results.
